Blog Assignment Topic 3

Critical Reflection 1

Stereotypes tend to be constructed iconographically - a few verbal and visual traits are used to represent the character or group and they tend to be static and unchanging . There are a number of approaches to studying racism in stereotypes. One approach is to focus on racist roles assigned to a group through negative stereotypes. Hooks referred to examples of traditional stereotyping of African-American women as either mammies or whores.

Critical Reflection 2

From my personal experience, media stereotype often shown on TV is princess and prince are always portrayed as positive and nice who always have their dreams come true. Princesses never have bad attitudes or any negative images. There are always miracles happening around those princesses when they in deep trouble which never happen in real life. Other than that, princes in cartoons are always portrayed as heroes with superior bravery and specific super powers or abilities.

Other than that, in American movies, black people are always poor and not educated. Whereas white people are always rich, well-mannered and educated. White people are always having a better job with high salary but black people are always robbers which do bad things.

Stereotypes are problematic, people would transform the image showed on screen into realities. It is unfair for those who are portrayed as what others think they are but not in real life.
