Blog Assignment Topic 4

Critical Reflection 1

Media literacy is the ability to understand how mass media work, how they produce meanings, how they are organized, and how to use them wisely. The media literate person can describe the role media play in his or her life. The media literate person understands the basic conventions of various media, and enjoys their use in a deliberately conscious way. The media literate person understands the impact of music and special effects in heightening the drama of a television program or film...this recognition does not lessen the enjoyment of the action, but prevents the viewer from being unduly credulous or becoming unnecessarily frightened. The media literate person is in control of his or her media experiences.

The above discussion is adapted in part from the book Media & You: An Elementary Curriculum.

Critical Reflection 2

Its important for us FCM students to understand media literacy. Media literacy emphasizes more on critical thinking which helps us in generating creative ideas. It boost our creativity resulting in making us having an easier time in producing thoughtful artwork while dealing with assignments and projects.

Media literacy allows FCM students to draw on their experience of media forms and participate in classroom activities. When students are engaged in their topic, they will pay more attention in class enabling them to gain more knowledge from class.

Besides, media literacy can allow FCM students to read and write fluenty either audioly or visualy. With a better communication skill, we are able to deliver our ideas clearly and effortlessly hence indirectly increases our competitive power pre or post graduation.

Blog Assignment Topic 3

Critical Reflection 1

Stereotypes tend to be constructed iconographically - a few verbal and visual traits are used to represent the character or group and they tend to be static and unchanging . There are a number of approaches to studying racism in stereotypes. One approach is to focus on racist roles assigned to a group through negative stereotypes. Hooks referred to examples of traditional stereotyping of African-American women as either mammies or whores.

Critical Reflection 2

From my personal experience, media stereotype often shown on TV is princess and prince are always portrayed as positive and nice who always have their dreams come true. Princesses never have bad attitudes or any negative images. There are always miracles happening around those princesses when they in deep trouble which never happen in real life. Other than that, princes in cartoons are always portrayed as heroes with superior bravery and specific super powers or abilities.

Other than that, in American movies, black people are always poor and not educated. Whereas white people are always rich, well-mannered and educated. White people are always having a better job with high salary but black people are always robbers which do bad things.

Stereotypes are problematic, people would transform the image showed on screen into realities. It is unfair for those who are portrayed as what others think they are but not in real life.

Blog Assignment Topic 2

Critical Reflection 1
I don't usually take what's on the internet as truth without further consideration. Nowadays there are too many cases about people being cheated and this is a sign that we should be more aware. For example, there are many job vacancies advertisement on the internet without stating clearly the working criteria and the qualification. Most people that apply always find that the job are way more complicated than what stated in the advertisement.

Secondly, many people got cheated through shopping online. Shopping online has become a trend in this era because it is convenient and easy. Did i mention safe? Shopping online is not even safe because there are loads of cases showing that lots of the consumers had been cheated. The goods that they received are not exactly the same as showed on the internet. The size, function, color, quality and quantity usually doesn't fits the description and photo on the internet. This tells consumers to be more aware on whats on the internet.

Lastly, many rumors are being spread on the internet. Rumors about politics, entertainment and sports are the most popular that widely spread on the internet. There are many forums that discuss some issues which mostly contain lies from some posters who want to gain attention. So, these information on the internet cannot be trust fully.

Critical Reflection 2

This was a post i found in a forum while surfing the net. Its about a person who ordered some garment from a seller and apparently that person did not send her those things she ordered after she paid.

Internet users should be aware of shopping through internet because things are not 100% guaranteed. Before buying from a seller, consumers should check the seller's background, check those reviews posted by his/her previous customers to make everything clear. After you are sure and confident about this business, only hand in your payment to minimize the probability of being cheated.

As conclusion, internet is a place where people can say what they want and doesn't need to be responsible of what they said. So, we must think carefully before believing in anything which appears on the internet.
