Blog Assignment Topic 8
What kind of culture influences through technology can you see from today’s world?
It is obvious that the culture influence technology. For example, the TV culture. In the old days, watching TV is one of the most major entertainment but now, the TV culture is already over. Nobody sits all day in front of the TV just to make sure they don't miss their favorite TV program. We can just go online and either watch it streaming or just download it. It is possible for you to download the any episode or any season which has being aired years ago.
Nowadays, we don't write letters anymore. It has been replaced by instant messaging or email. People does not go out and makes friends with others anymore. They can just easily log in to facebook or myspace and there are tons of "friends" in their friend list. Anyhow, this isn't something that we should be proud of because this will cause us to have a not very good communication skill that may affect our future.
Critical Reflection 2
Is there a possibility to reshape the (new) culture today via new technology. How?
New technology definitely has the ability to reshape the culture. It's like something that happens every now and then. Every time some new technology was released, people will rush and get it and later adapt to it and indirectly, a new culture is formed. For instant, the Iphone; just like the video shown to us in class, every new student that enter the university get an Iphone. The Iphone has tons of function such as signing attendance, online lecture, campus map and many more. A new culture is shaped in the university and slowly became a habit of the students. Once you take the Iphones away from the students, they will be clueless.

Good Job.
Blog Assignment Topic 7
The documentary entitled "The Power of Nightmares (Part 3 - Shadow in the Cave)" by Adam Curtis was shown in class on Monday. How do you relate the information given to you in the documentary to the theory of Media Imperialism that we talked about in lecture?
Media imperialism is a theory stating that smaller countries are losing their identity due to the force-feeding of media from larger nations. It can be equated to small community shops closing down due to large superstores moving in, taking over and having a monopoly. As the larger media corporation begin to take over, smaller media companies are either being forced out or swallowed up.
Media imperialism is not just seen internationally. When large amounts of media output are produced by just a few, or even one company, then this too is media imperialism. Countries such as Canada and Italy are often accused of media imperialism. A large amount of the media output in these two countries is controlled by just one company.
The problem with just one company or owner controlling the media is that media output can be biased. The owner can decide on what information is shown, as well as what to censor. This can sometimes come down to an influence from the country's government. Media imperialism has often been linked with a lack of freedom of information. A large number of 24-hour news channels have been found to be acting without regard to journalistic integrity. Some countries' governments will even be dictated to by large manufacturing companies. This is because a great amount of the country's wealth is brought in from these manufacturing companies. If there is any bad press about these companies, the company will simply move somewhere else.

Critical Reflection 2
The documentary is really interesting by showing how media really "works". Take the Us government as an example, the most powerful country is spreading their thought about terrorism through media. They are trying to make everybody follow their foot steps and think how they want everybody to think. This brainwashing treatment is working extremely well because mostly every country rely heavily on Western news sources. The most obvious incident is when 2 planes crashed the World Trade Center, they broadcast the news repetitively trying to instill the thought that Al-Qaeda did it and Muslims are terrorist into viewers' mind. Then President Bush declare a war towards Iraq and Afghanistan as a revenge for the terrorist attack against US and he did it. This is what media imperialism is all about, the person in charge decides what information he wanted to deliver and what not because the media is fully under his control. Media imperialism is bias because it may contain a lot of personal feeling and opinion which makes the output unfair and lack of trust from the public.

Blog Assignment Topic 6
Using McLuhan's "Tetrad of Media" (see diagram below), choose a medium or media application or tool (e.g. newspaper, books, radio, tv, film, internet, computer games, handphone, instant messaging, blogging, online advertising, youtube, facebook etc.) and explain its media effects? Please refer to Week 9's lecture notes plus your own research to discuss this topic.
Instant messaging (IM) is a form of real time communication between two or more people based on typed text. The text is conveyed via devices connected over a network such as the Internet.
Enhance - you can send instant message anytime anywhere as long as there is an available network using laptop or mobile phone. Information can be delivered in a split second without delay and contain no mistakes.

Retrieves - Instant messaging evolves from letters. Nowadays, instant messaging has already became the mainstream in communication because it is free and convenience.
Obsolesce - Instant messaging obsolesce the traditional way in delivering information which is writing letters. Letters need to be deliver using few days causing the message being delayed but instant messaging does not has this problem.
Critical Reflection 2
A cellphone is a long-range, electronic device used for mobile voice or data communication over a network of specialized base stations known as cell sites.
Enhance - A cellphone makes life easier. You can call and receive calls from anywhere letting you to stay connect with friends and relatives. A cellphone is also a entertainment device containing mp3, camera, mini games and etc.
Reverse - Nowadays, people rely too much on cellphone making them unable to live independently without their cellphone. Other than that, cellphones release some microwaves that is harmful to our body which can cause cancer and other diseases.
Retrieves - Cellphones evolve from traditional home use phone. Home use phone has wire and it is very inconvenient and impossible to bring them along with us.
Obsolesce - Cellphones make public phone obsolesced. Everybody has their own cellphones and of course they prefer to use their own phone to make calls instead of using the public phone which sometimes had been vandalized.

Blog Assignment Topic 5
Obscenity
Obscenity, is a term that is most often used in a legal context to describe expressions (words, images, actions) that offend the prevalent sexual morality of the time. It is often replaced by the word salaciousness.
The definition of obscenity differs from culture to culture, between communities within a single culture, and also between individuals within those communities. Many cultures have produced laws to define what is considered to be obscene, and censorship is often used to try to suppress or control materials that are obscene under these definitions: usually including, but not limited to, pornographic material. As such censorship restricts freedom of expression, crafting a legal definition of obscenity presents a civil liberties issue.
Pornography
Pornography or porn is the explicit depiction of sexual subject matter with the sole intention of sexually exciting the viewer. It is to a certain extent similar to erotica, which is the use of sexually arousing imagery. Over the past few decades, an immense industry for the production and consumption of pornography has grown, due to emergence of the VCR, the DVD, and the internet, as well as the emergence of social attitudes more tolerant of sexual portrayals.
Pornography may use any of a variety of media. However, when sexual acts are performed for a live audience, by definition it is not pornography, as the term applies to the depiction of the act, rather than the act itself. Thus, portrayals such as sex shows and striptease are not pornographic.
Indecency
Standards of decency vary greatly depending on the cultural context. Most nations have laws against indecency which regulate certain sexual acts, and restrict one's ability to display certain parts of the body in public.
Indecent exposure is the deliberate exposure by a person of a portion or portions of his or her own body under circumstances where such an exposure is likely to be seen as contrary to the local commonly accepted standards of decency, and may in fact be a violation of law. In some countries a breach of the standards of modesty is considered to be public indecency.

Critical Reflection 2
Obscenity can be said as some kind of action can may cause sex desire. Striptease is 1 of the example of obscenity because it turns those audiences on and causing them to have a sex desire.
Indecent material contains sexual or excretory material that does not rise to the level of obscenity. It can be just exposing some parts of the body such as body art.
Lastly, pornography is the ‘explicit representation of sexual activity in literature, films, etc, to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings.’ It has more differences compared to obscenity and indecency. Pornography shows sex as the only important thing in a relationship between a man and a woman or a man and a man or a woman with a woman. The community finds pornography more offensive than obscenity and indecency because it focuses on sex organs and it cannot substitute for long-term love and commitment. It produces short-lived thrills and does nothing to develop a loving sexual relationship which may delivers a wrong message to youth.

Blog Assignment Topic 4
Media literacy is the ability to understand how mass media work, how they produce meanings, how they are organized, and how to use them wisely. The media literate person can describe the role media play in his or her life. The media literate person understands the basic conventions of various media, and enjoys their use in a deliberately conscious way. The media literate person understands the impact of music and special effects in heightening the drama of a television program or film...this recognition does not lessen the enjoyment of the action, but prevents the viewer from being unduly credulous or becoming unnecessarily frightened. The media literate person is in control of his or her media experiences.
The above discussion is adapted in part from the book Media & You: An Elementary Curriculum.

Critical Reflection 2
Its important for us FCM students to understand media literacy. Media literacy emphasizes more on critical thinking which helps us in generating creative ideas. It boost our creativity resulting in making us having an easier time in producing thoughtful artwork while dealing with assignments and projects.
Media literacy allows FCM students to draw on their experience of media forms and participate in classroom activities. When students are engaged in their topic, they will pay more attention in class enabling them to gain more knowledge from class.
Besides, media literacy can allow FCM students to read and write fluenty either audioly or visualy. With a better communication skill, we are able to deliver our ideas clearly and effortlessly hence indirectly increases our competitive power pre or post graduation.

Blog Assignment Topic 3
Stereotypes tend to be constructed iconographically - a few verbal and visual traits are used to represent the character or group and they tend to be static and unchanging . There are a number of approaches to studying racism in stereotypes. One approach is to focus on racist roles assigned to a group through negative stereotypes. Hooks referred to examples of traditional stereotyping of African-American women as either mammies or whores.
http://www.usask.ca/education/coursework/802papers/crawford/jamesc.html
From my personal experience, media stereotype often shown on TV is princess and prince are always portrayed as positive and nice who always have their dreams come true. Princesses never have bad attitudes or any negative images. There are always miracles happening around those princesses when they in deep trouble which never happen in real life. Other than that, princes in cartoons are always portrayed as heroes with superior bravery and specific super powers or abilities.
Other than that, in American movies, black people are always poor and not educated. Whereas white people are always rich, well-mannered and educated. White people are always having a better job with high salary but black people are always robbers which do bad things.
Stereotypes are problematic, people would transform the image showed on screen into realities. It is unfair for those who are portrayed as what others think they are but not in real life.

It really helps
Blog Assignment Topic 2
I don't usually take what's on the internet as truth without further consideration. Nowadays there are too many cases about people being cheated and this is a sign that we should be more aware. For example, there are many job vacancies advertisement on the internet without stating clearly the working criteria and the qualification. Most people that apply always find that the job are way more complicated than what stated in the advertisement.
Secondly, many people got cheated through shopping online. Shopping online has become a trend in this era because it is convenient and easy. Did i mention safe? Shopping online is not even safe because there are loads of cases showing that lots of the consumers had been cheated. The goods that they received are not exactly the same as showed on the internet. The size, function, color, quality and quantity usually doesn't fits the description and photo on the internet. This tells consumers to be more aware on whats on the internet.
Lastly, many rumors are being spread on the internet. Rumors about politics, entertainment and sports are the most popular that widely spread on the internet. There are many forums that discuss some issues which mostly contain lies from some posters who want to gain attention. So, these information on the internet cannot be trust fully.

i really hope he close the website and return everyone money
http://www.malaysianbabes.net/forum/online-website-cheating-t27047.html
This was a post i found in a forum while surfing the net. Its about a person who ordered some garment from a seller and apparently that person did not send her those things she ordered after she paid.
Internet users should be aware of shopping through internet because things are not 100% guaranteed. Before buying from a seller, consumers should check the seller's background, check those reviews posted by his/her previous customers to make everything clear. After you are sure and confident about this business, only hand in your payment to minimize the probability of being cheated.
As conclusion, internet is a place where people can say what they want and doesn't need to be responsible of what they said. So, we must think carefully before believing in anything which appears on the internet.

Blog Assignment Topic 1 : Social media
Critical Reflection 1
“Social Media In Plain English” is talking about social media in our daily life. Social Media is a platform for people to share opinion, ideas and every single little things that happened around them. Youtube, Dailymotion, Myspace and Facebook are the most well known social media platform among others. The video used ice-cream to represent the social media. Owners put up boards so that customers can rate, comment, and describe their ice-cream to make things easier for other customers when making decisions. Most of the websites now provide rating and commenting system so the public can voice their opinions so that the owner of the site can improve. Besides, it also get people closer and create a fun and interesting online community.

Social Media is a tool for human to communicate among each other. Discussion and sharing ideas can be done through social media such as Blogger and Youtube where you can publish your comment on it.
Business can also incorporate with social media to gain more benefits. Through the ratings and comments published by users on the net, companies can improve on their products according to the suggestion provided by users.
